I’m not big on reviews: Critiquing the art of others??? I mean, what a giant waste of time!? My apologies in advance to all you ultra-hipster/professional critics out there but I just can’t buy what you’re selling… Go pick up a paintbrush or a banjo and learn to create something yourself and/or go back to your humble servant meanderings.
*Please note that the following is by no means a review in any way shape or form.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, let me tell you about this artist that I can’t get enough of: Will Johnson. He and his worthy collaborators invented my favorite album in the history of music with 2005’s “South San Gabriel - The Carlton Chronicles.”
I own every record Will has ever made with Centro-matic, South San Gabriel, his work with Jason Molina, and all of his solo material. 17 albums in total! I’ve studied, YES STUDIED his music very deeply… his lyrics, his voice, his arrangements. His music is my drug of choice, and thankfully, there is so much of it out there! He’s the only songwriter I listen to on a daily basis and my interest in his work is undying.
I check up on them regularly at www.centro-matic.com, but lately I’ve been so self-absorbed in my own work. The only reason I went to visit their site tonight is because I was saying to myself “I need some more Will Johnson, I wonder if they have something new out?” To my great surprise and delight I discovered they released an EP called “Eyas” and I downloaded it immediately!
Since this isn’t a review, I’m only going to say that “Eyas” is incredible… after listening to his records for so long I’m accustomed to expect nothing less than incredible, though. Will Johnson and his team never fail to deliver, even though it baffles me that they get better with every release.
Give us MORE Will!!! The world will never have enough…
